What insurers are licensed to write
Each of the 886 entities carries one licence class as recorded by its supervisor, or inferred from its name where the register does not state one (the EIOPA register for EU/EEA undertakings). Composite licences, which allow both life and non-life business, survive mainly in markets that have not yet mandated separation.
General (Non-life)
Short-term property, casualty, motor, marine and other non-life covers.
Life
Long-term life assurance, annuities, pensions and savings products.
Composite
Licensed to write both life and non-life business under one entity.
Reinsurer
Carriers that accept risk ceded by primary insurers.
Takaful / Islamic
Sharia-compliant risk-sharing operators (takaful, participation and retakaful).
Microinsurer
Low-premium covers for low-income households and small businesses.
Funeral / Assistance
Funeral, assistance and burial benefit providers.
Specialty / Credit / Captive
Credit, trade, legal-expenses, captive, agricultural, statutory-scheme or other specialist carriers.
Health / Medical
Medical, health and hospital cash insurers licensed separately from life.
